Community Service Programs

We focus on six imperative Community Service Programs (CSPs) year-round to guide projects and address the needs in our community. Each month, one committee also plans a project, speaker, or educational activity during our membership meeting. A sampling of each program is below.

Arts & Culture: Chair Heather Massengill

Arts and culture are essential to making the world a more beautiful, thoughtful, and caring place. FVJWC promotes arts and culture in our community by:

  • Co-hosting and participating in GFWC Arts Festivals at the local, district, and state levels

  • Donating to local art classrooms to provide more opportunities for students to explore and create

  • Volunteering for Kids N Praise at Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church leading children in learning songs for worship and a large musical production twice per year.

  • Attending and promoting the Follow Me 2 Fuquay Music Series

  • Supporting the performing arts: NC Symphony, DPAC, Duke Performing Arts Center, and local schools

  • Supporting events at NC Museum of Art

Environment: Chair Ruth Galle

Being good stewards of the earth is critical to preserving our environment for generations to come. Our club participates in endeavors to beautify and sustain the world around us such as:

  • Sponsoring recycling drives

  • Participating in our local “Clean the Quay” day

  • Supporting our state zoo, aquariums, and science museums

  • Recycling grocery bags and making them into mats for the homeless

Education & Libraries: Chair lindsey williams

Many of our local projects are designed to support schools and teachers, promote libraries and literacy, and create a better world through education. Some of these initiatives include: 

  • The Sunshine Project: Our club provides snacks and shelf-stable meals to 17 local elementary, middle and high schools monthly to support Fuquay-Varina students facing food insecurity.

  • Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship: We award a $1,500 scholarship each year to a high school student who will be attending a four-year college in North Carolina.

  • Teacher Grants: We provide $500 grants to first-year teachers or teachers who are new to their subject, grade, or school

  • Alston Ridge Park StoryWalk: This special project is part of our ongoing partnership with the Town of Fuquay Varina and the Fuquay-Varina Community Library to provide literacy opportunities to children, promote family time, and enjoy nature.

  • Regularly volunteering in and donating to local schools and promoting Box Tops for Education

Health & Wellness: Chair Cara Perry

Raising awareness and addressing issues that affect the well-being of individuals, families, and communities is one of our top priorities. Our projects promoting health and wellness have included:

  • Organizing and sponsoring local teenage girls to attend a TeenPower Workshop that we held at The Fuquay-Varina Community Center. Click here for more information on KidPower.

  • Installing and maintaining a Baby Blessings Box on North Ennis Street in Fuquay-Varina where we invite members of our community to, “Take what you need and give what you can.”

  • Regularly donating car seats to our local fire department and police department

  • Contributing to clothing drives for Dress for Success

  • Regularly donating to SPCA of Wake County and Harnett County Animal Services

  • Regularly donating to Hand of Hope

  • Christmas caroling at local rest homes

  • Regularly donating to the Fuquay-Varina Food Pantry

  • Supporting local youth sports teams through an equipment drive in partnership with The Town of Fuquay-Varina and Play It Again Sports

Civic Engagement & Outreach: Chair Rachel Bishop

Members of our club strive to become better world citizens through advocacy, education, and action. These efforts include:

Domestic Violence & Advocates for children: Chair Hillary Millen

The goal of this CSP is to raise awareness of domestic & sexual violence and to advocate for victims and survivors of teen dating violence, elder abuse, and child abuse. These projects include:

  • Supporting Interact of Wake County and Pass It On Thrift Store

  • Wearing purple for domestic violence awareness

  • ​Participating in clothing drives for Dress For Success

  • Donating a handicap swing for children to use free of charge at the Fuquay-Varina splash pad

  • Donating a handicap accessible swing at a local park

  • Sponsoring and serving dinner at Read and Feed

  • Supporting the Fuquay-Varina Police Department’s “Shop With a Cop”

  • Sponsoring and supporting our local high schools’ Juniorette Clubs
